Viking Day

17 Mar 2019

On Saturday 16th March, Kendal Museum invited Viking reenactors to exhibit crafts, combat training and impart knowledge about all things Viking. The Young Archaeology Club funded the event that saw the Northumbria Herred of the Vikings take over the temporary gallery space with demonstrations of weaving, weaponry and woodwork. Other activities included leatherwork, jewellery making, dairying, runic writing and games. We learnt about the innovative navigation and combat techniques of the Vikings, all the while allowing the public to access our collections on a Saturday. As well as experiencing living history of the Vikings, visitors could marvel at our Viking objects in the Kendal and Westmorland Gallery, including the remains of a Viking boat from Kentmere, a Viking Bowl mount, and the Witherslack sword
