Kendal Museum Access Statement

This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all our guests/visitors.

Access Statement for Kendal Museum

Introduction
Situated in Kendal town, the Museum is situated in an historic building on level ground a short distance from Kendal railway station, The Museum was awarded the Quality Assured England Rose in March 2011. The Museum is accessible via a ramp (for pushclairs and wheel chairs) and has an accessible WC. We look forward to welcoming you. Pre-Arrival

  • The Museum is located opposite Kendal railway station and it is a 1/4 of a mile level walk from the town's bus station.

Car Parking and Arrival

  • There is a pay and display car park at the Museum which has one dedicated blue badge parking space. Charges are payable. It is a very short level walk on tarmac and stone flags to the main entrance where there are 2 steps up to the entrance and then 4 steps to the reception. There is ramp access to the reception and a bell to call for assistance. The doors open up to 1.5 metres wide to allow access.

Main Entrance, Reception and Ticketing Area

  • The ground floor reception area has short piled carpet tiles and there is a visitor soft seating area. It is well lit.

Attraction (displays, exhibits, rides etc.)

  • The galleries are all well lit and under foot are either short piled carpet, stone or wood. The upstairs and basement galleries are only accessible via stairs which have handrails.

Public Toilets

  • There is an accessible unisex WC on the ground floor. It is well lit with a linoloeum floor, lever grab rail to the right of the WC and a hand wash basin with lever taps.

Shop(s)

  • The Museum shop is situated on the ground floor next to the reception, it is well let and the displays range from floor standing to wall shelving - all offering easy access. The shop/reception is taffed at all times and assistance is always available.

Grounds and Gardens

  • The lawned and paved gardens to the front of the Museum are a pleasant place to enjoy a picnic. There are a number of benches, the ground is flat and the paths are wide.

Additional Information

  • Assistance dogs are welcome and there are clear guidelines which the staff follow in the event of an evacuation.

  • The Museum web site offers a colourful glimpse of what is on offer and special events.

Future Plans

  • Kendal College manages Kendal Museum and the partnership is working to improve the visitor experience and accessibility for all.
