Explore space with us 2012
TweetNext meeting – 25th February – 2.30pm to 4pm
Do you want to explore space but you’re a bit young to be an astronaut? Then Space Explorers is for you. The club is for 9 to 16 year olds and meets once a month, on a Saturday afternoon, at Kendal Museum.

We call on the experts – professional and amateur astronomers and astrophysicists – to share their fascination with the cosmos with us and to discover the latest news from the world of space exploration. We also investigate for ourselves. We could be looking at gravity, the light from stars, planets, telescopes – or anything in the universe! Come and share your interest about the universe with us and let’s explore further.
If you are interested in astronomy, at whatever level, and you are between
9 and 16 then this could be the club for you.
The date for the next meetings are:
- Saturday 25th February Planet Cake
How is it that we know that there was water on Mars? How can rocks tell us of things that happened in the past? Inspired by cake and fudge we will investigate how we can tell something about ingredients and how they were cooked from the finished goodie. Not so different with rocks! (If you are diabetic or cannot eat cake, fudge and the like, please let us know)
- Saturday 24th March Aliens
If the universe is infinite – or close enough to that – then surely there must be other living things out there. What might they be like? We survive on this planet because we are suited to it. What might other planets with living things be like? And then what might their inhabitants look like?
- Saturday 21st April Rockets and Return
It is very hard to escape the Earth’s gravitation and very hard to come back. Some practical experiments around upward thrust and some ideas on how to get back without burning up
- Saturday 26th May Design A Planet
Planets come in all s….. well all sizes and conditions. Discover some of the variety of planets and design your own heavenly or hellish planet
- Saturday 23rd June Curiosity
The large new all singing and all dancing (well, almost) Mars Rover named ‘Curiosity’ will be landing on Mars in August (we hope). It is a big craft with the weirdest method for landing. Let’s hope it all works! We have a look at this and build our own little rover models
Space Explorers takes a Summer break but keep looking at this website for updates on other activities and a possible family activity with the Eddington Astronomical Society of Kendal
- Saturday 22nd September Space Station
Discover what it is like to be aboard the Space Station and what the craft needs to have for people to survive on it. We will try to make our own model versions
- Saturday 20th October Our Hot Centre
Why do volcanoes happen? Why is the terrible hot inside of our Earth necessary for our survival? Can we make our own lava (but cooler!)?
- 4th November Reading the Night Sky
The names for the constellations are very old but even modern astronomers use these ‘patterns’ in the sky to find their way around the night sky. Can we find the constellations now that the nights are dark?
We meet at Kendal Museum at 2.30pm and finish at 4pm.
Open to members at £3.00 a session.
