Mountains: A Local Perspective

The Mountain Heritage Trust in connection with Kendal Museum is pleased to present an exhibition featuring newly catalogued material from the Bonington Quest for Adventure Archive Project.
The framework for the exhibition will utilise the 1975 expedition to Mount Everest to provide a template to look at how expeditions are planned and play out.
The expedition to Mount Everest employed military style siege tactics and computer programming to ensure that all elements were accounted for and that man-power and supplies could be employed with greatest efficiency.
At the finale it was inevitably man pitted against himself, the elements and a vertiginous, breath-snatching high mountain!
The various sections will look at the following stages:
- Planning and Team Members – who, what, where, when, how?
- Arrival and Assembly – Travelling through exotic Nepal
- Base Camp – essentially a small town!
- Flora and Fauna – illustrated by artefacts from Kendal Museum’s Natural History Collection
- Onwards and upwards – Tackling the infamous rock band, summiting and snow hole saviour on descent
- Post Expedition Publicity Machine – lecture tours, meet & greets, reports aplenty and the all important publishing deal for the book!
This exhibition is free, but a small charge is levied for entrance to Museum.
